Description

Work through real-world legal challenges faced by associations while also learning about recent developments in the law. Participants, in a courtroom setting with presiding "judges", will review association legal scenarios with each other and experienced content leaders - association legal counsel and an association CEO. We will collectively discuss strategies and potential outcomes and hear and react to what actually happened. In addition, legal updates will be interspersed throughout the session.

Joel Corwin, JD, counsels association and other nonprofit clients regarding their legal needs, often acting as general counsel. He is a member of the Bar of the States of California and Illinois and has represented associations since 1981.   

Mr. Corwin received his B.A. from Yale University in 1971, where he was the recipient of the Gerald Robert Steinberg Memorial Scholarship Award. He attended Cornell University Law School and the University of Minnesota Law School where he earned his J.D. cum laude in 1974 and served as Managing Editor of the Minnesota Law Review.

He is a former two-year Chair of the Nonprofit Organizations Committee of the State Bar of California, where he is active in drafting California legislation benefiting associations and other nonprofits. Previously, as Vice Chair, he headed up the Form 990 Policy Series Group, completing 12 memoranda for lawyers with respect to nonprofit governance policies responsive to developments in the IRS Form 990.

Mr. Corwin is a member, and a former Director, of the California Society of Association Executives (CalSAE), is a member, and former two-year Chair, of its Legislative Committee and was the 2010 CalSAE Associate Member of the Year. He is also a member of the Chicago Bar Association where he has been Chair of the Trade and Professional Associations Law Committee, the Corporation and Business Law Committee and the Financial Institutions Committee.

Mr. Corwin has received the highest rating, AV Preeminent®, under the Martindale-Hubbell® Peer Review Ratings in both legal ability and general ethical standards. 


Tom Ingram, CAE's Profile

The Diving Equipment & Marketing Association


Tom Ingram has over 40 years of experience working in education, business and marketing and has served as the President and CEO of the Diving Equipment and Marketing Association (DEMA) since 2002. Previously, Ingram was the Director of Marketing with two professional diving equipment manufacturers and was a certified Business Counselor for the U.S. Small Business Administration and Coordinator for a Florida Small Business Development Center.  In that role, Ingram served as liaison to local and state government officials and the public, and was responsible for federal regulation compliance. 

In the 1980s and 1990s, Ingram was Department Chair for a recreational business degree program at Barry University in Miami, Florida as well as for Florida Institute of Technology. In addition to administrative duties, Ingram taught numerous university courses in a variety of business subjects including marketing, business administration, sales management, advertisement, accounting, finance, and others.

Ingram holds a Masters’ degree in Marketing and Management and in 2008 – 2009 was recognized as Association Executive of the Year by CalSAE. He served as Chair of the CalSAE Board in 2010-2011.  Tom currently serves on the CalSAE San Diego Regional Council and is a Certified Association Executive (CAE).

Ingram is currently on the Board of Directors for the Cayman Islands International Scuba Diving Hall of Fame through their Department of Tourism, and has been published and cited in several business and marketing related texts and periodicals.
